To the high school anon - it takes a while to make friends and fit in but if you've got the patience you'll find a group to get in with. Trust me. It took me a few months but I got there, and you'll fall out with your friends, and make new friends, it's all part of high school. Try talking to people you get sat with in your classes, it's the best place to start

I have NO IDEA what I’m doing but I tried to make a brochure for 7 cups of tea and I thought I’d share it here.

tl;dr of this post before i even start:  this website is a place to vent anonymously about anything you want… to someone who actually wants to listen.

hello followers and whoever else is seeing this post!!  i wanted to write about 7 cups of tea, the website i’ve been spending most of my time on lately.  it’s a wonderful website with a fantastic premise, and i’ve found it very helpful.

the premise of 7 cups of tea is simple: you start a chat to vent to a listener who is a real person who wants to be there and will listen and respond.

i’ve been working as a listener at 7cups for almost a month, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  a while back, i wanted to become a trained crisis counselor, but i was unable to due to my anxiety talking on the phone.  since 7cups is text-based, it takes the anxiety out of the situation for me.

(some listeners do have calling available if you’d prefer to speak out loud, i’m just not one of them.)

when you click on that link, you’ll be brought to the homepage of the site.  a large button will say “CONNECT TO A LISTENER NOW”.  clicking this will create a ‘general chat’ - ie, a chat that the next available listener will pick up.

in the upper left hand corner is a tab that says ‘Browse Listeners’.  this will show you the list of currently available listeners, and you can click ‘chat now’ if you’d like to chat with one of them.  they have a biography, photo, and detailed star ratings from other members indicating their helpfulness.

connecting to someone will bring you to an IM page where you can type back and forth to the listener.

what can you talk about?  absolutely anything!

i’ve talked to literally hundreds of people in the month i’ve been a listener, and we’ve talked about everything.  mental disorders, self-destructive behaviors, relationship issues, breakups, fights with friends, work stress, parenting stress, grief, need for distraction, need for validation, need to rant about flavors of potato chips… there is no topic “too mundane” for 7cups, which is part of what makes it wonderful.

the one exception is that 7cups listeners cannot help people who are actively suicidal, as they haven’t had the proper suicide crisis training (suicide crisis counselors receive 60+ hours of irl training).  if you are suicidal and would like to start a chat on a website instead of calling a hotline, try imalive.org or the national suicide prevention chat.  their operating hours are 2PM - 2AM EST.

other than that, all issues are fair game.  if you’ve been looking for support or a place to rant about ANYTHING this is a great website.  if you’re anxious or depressed and need a distraction, this is a great website.

if you’re a teenager who wants to vent on 7cups (17 and under), go to the ‘Browse Listeners’ page and narrow your criteria to ‘Teen Listeners’.  this will show you listeners who are available for teens, instead of including listeners available for only adults.

in addition, 7cups has help guides for various mental disorders and coping mechanisms.  these can be found in the upper left hand corner under “Support & Guides”.

if you would like to become a listener, click on ‘Become a Listener’ in the upper right hand corner.  there are no prerequisites regarding education.  you must be eighteen or over, or sixteen and over with a parent’s permission.  you must complete the active listening course.  there’s a listener chatroom where you can go make friends with other listeners and ask for advice should you need it.

all in all this is a really great website!!  it would be fabulous if you could reblog this to get the word out, a lot of people don’t know this exists and it’s such a wonderful place to get stuff off your chest

if anybody has any questions, send me an ask!
